Blog 2 "Shitty First Drafts"

I used to think a first draft was a chance for me to get all my ideas out of my head and onto paper. Of course over the years I have learned that a first draft is essentially that, but it is also a lot more as well. I have learned that the best way to come up with a first draft is to have an idea, have some purpose, and be able to have an opinion on your topic. I have always tried to pick topics that I am passionate about, because if you don't, why are you really writing about it? Why not choose something that matters to you? I find it easier to spill words onto paper if I'm passionate about my topic. One thing that I feel all writers can relate to, is that your work can always have room for improvement. Anne Lamott, from "bird by bird" touches on this and I think it is important to reiterate. No matter how many times I have revised an essay, a peer of mine can always pick out something that I could fix or alter. So with this being a first draft, you have plenty more attempts to fix those little mistakes. The first draft is the foundation of a great paper, it may have some hiccups and a few adjustments to make, but that's the point of these things.
