Blog 1 "Understanding Genres" BBC
The variety of genres available to us in this day and age is truly remarkable. But from my opinion it all starts out with determining which type of genre to use for different situations. A lot of us focus to aim at the audiences' attention. Who's in the audience? How old is the audience? What kind of style do I have to speak with? When you compose, the trick to grabbing an audiences attention is to ensure that the style you're using is appropriate to your purpose, but also easily understood by the minds of your audience. As our world grows with knowledge, our minds have to be able to adapt and find a way to intrigue curiosity in an audience. As writers we must keep them edging to hear more. Theres's no single way to explain why we write; some for pleasure, others to display a message. Genres are always keeping us on our toes. That's the beauty in writing because there's no "correct" mechanism to the styles we use or the way we physically write. It all depends on the different situations or purposes, for which we decide to pass on a message.
